THE TECHNIQUES USED BY STUDENTS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT IN TRANSLATING SHORT STORY

Translation technique is a method used to divert messages from source language to target language, applied to the level of words, phrases, clauses or sentences. The translators will also be helped in determining the most appropriate equivalent in the target language. Thus, the equivalence of the translation can be applied in various lingual units. In addition, the use of translation techniques not only will produce an accurate translation but is also acceptable and easy to read by target text reader. This research is aimed to find out the techniques used by students of English Education Department in translating short story. This research is a qualitative descriptive research by analyzing the text in English short stories entitled “Art” by Anton Checkhov, “The Girl without Hands” by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, and “The Door” by E.B White which is translated into Indonesian by students of the sixth semester of English Education Department class D at UIN Antasari Banjarmasin. The researcher collects the written documents from the results of translation short stories by students, analyzes the words, phrases, and sentences they translated in the documents and makes conclusions about what techniques they use and what techniques are dominant and rarely used. After being analyzed, the researcher found 8 translation techniques used by students based on Molina and Albir’s theory, namely: Amplification, Borrowing, Calque, Literal Translation, Modulation, Particularization, Reduction, and Transposition. In this research, transposition technique is the most dominant technique used by students and particularization technique is a technique that is rarely used by students.
