Ebeveynlerin Skolyoz Konusundaki Farkındalıkları

2018
Objective: If the spinal curvature that develops in scoliosis is too large, it may cause heart and lung problems and if highly severe curvatures develop, they may compress the nerves or spinal cord, which may lead to stroke. This study was carried out to investigate the awareness of scoliosis (Spinal Curvature-Postural impairments) in parents with children aged 8-18 years. Material and Methods: The research was carried out at a Family Health Center affiliated to the Batman province center. The data of the study were collected from 400 parents (mothers and fathers) who presented at the Family Health Center between August 1 and October 30, 2017. The data were collected by using a descriptive information form. Results: It was determined that 83.0% of parents who participated in the study had never heard of the term scoliosis before and 91.5% did not know that one in every three children suffered from scoliosis. 2.3% of the parents in the study stated that the three common symptoms of scoliosis existed in their children. It was found that the relationship between the children who had scoliosis symptoms and the daily duration of the sitting position at the desk in order to study was statistically significant (r=0.111, p=0.026). Conclusion: It was found that the majority of the parents were not aware of scoliosis and did not pay attention to scoliosis risk factors. Besides, it was determined that there was a significant relationship between the time spent by the child to study at the desk and the presence of scoliosis symptoms. Development of parental awareness about scoliosis and determination and enforcement of national policies in order to convert school screenings to routine follow-ups are recommended. Wide ranging prospective projects and studies on scoliosis should be planned.
