A field trial with a physiological method of conception control.

1962
In a study of 210 women participating in an Orthonovum regimen for c ontraceptive purposes 5 rejected the program while a 100% infertility rate was noted over 3600 cycles. Cycle regularity was found to increase while duration and quantity were found to decrease. Weight gain was observed in 25% of patients. In cases where breakthrough bleeding had occurred when the amount of estrogen was adjusted to .06 mg/day breakthrough bleeding decreased to near zero. When patients were questioned about libido no one reported a decrease. The success of these trials is attributable to the efficacy of the compound to the dedication of the personnel and to the motivation of the participants. This study shows that norethindrone is acceptable and clinically effective as a contraceptive.
