IEEE 13 Bus Benchmark Model for Real-Time Cyber-Physical Control and Power Systems Studies

2019
Cyber-physical systems are becoming more important to study and understand within our modern society. Previously., physical and cognitive disturbances were the predominate concern for power systems, but a high penetration of internet connected devices within the power grid requires careful consideration of the implication cyber disturbances may have on physical or cognitive aspects of the system. This work introduces a new benchmark model intended to accommodate interdisciplinary studies that may include all three types of disturbances (physical, cyber and cognitive) and the interrelation between them. The model is designed to run on MATLAB Simulink and OPAL-RT real time simulation systems to enable greater flexibility for hardware in the loop and cyber event monitoring. Potential applications are discussed, as well as a demonstration of a test case for detecting and clearing a fault.
