Management of Gastric Cancer

2019
Gastric cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer mortality worldwide, although its incidence in the USA is lower compared to Southeast Asia. Its presentation can be incidental, with nonspecific abdominal pain as the most common presenting symptom. For the work-up of gastric cancer, novel diagnostic modalities have emerged. Endoscopic ultrasound and positron emission tomography with the combination of computed tomography, together with diagnostic laparoscopy and peritoneal cytology, make the clinical staging and preoperative planning very accurate. However, surgery, in combination with chemotherapy or chemoradiation, is still the only modality that can offer a chance for a cure. Currently, multidisciplinary approach is essential for improved outcomes.
