2008
[eng] Role of banks in financing Tunisian economy . This paper deals with the composition of external financings in Tunisia and its evolution during a period (1983-2005) of deep financial reforms. Using financial national accounts, we compute several financing ratios which allow us to assess the share of domestic banks in the financing of non-financial agents. According to our results, the share of loans offered by domestic banks does not exceed 19% of financings of the all non-financial agents (vs. 13% of the external financings of firms). The Tunisian financial system is still in a « bankarization » process. Our results provide evidence for the lack of impact of financial reforms which do not seem to have allowed the take-off of financings by claims. In a few words, Tunisian financial system is neither a bank-based system nor a market-based system. . . Classification JEL : G10, G21, O16, O55 (This abstract was borrowed from another version of this item.)
