Traps and Insecticide-Treated Foliage for Use Against the Japanese Beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae)

Several insecticides (bendiocarb, malathion, carbaryl, and methoxychlor) were applied to soybean foliage surrounding traps for Popillia japonica Newman baited with phenethyl propionate + eugenol + geraniol (3:7:3) + Japonilure. Bendiocarb was also applied to parts of some of the traps. Although carbaryl and bendiocarb on foliage killed more beetles than the other insecticides, none of the trap-insecticide combinations killed more beetles than the traps alone. Applications of bendiocarb to traps significantly decreased captures, an indication that this compound is repellent to the insect.
