Analysis of a Heat Source and Sink in a Partially Open Enclosure

2015
In this study a partially open enclosure with a source/sink pair is examined. The study is divided into two parts. The first part examines the effect of the source/sink magnitude. The results show that the smallest Rayleigh number ratio, +/- 2.5, results in the highest magnitude of the Nusselt numbers along the hot wall. In addition, the highest and lowest dimensionless temperatures correspond to the highest Rayleigh number ratio, +/- 250. The highest dimensionless stream functions are also associated with the highest Rayleigh number ratio. The second part of the study examines the effects of unequal source/sink values. For this part of the study the results show that the lowest dimensionless temperatures in the enclosure are associated with the case where the source is one tenth the strength of the sink. However, the largest dimensionless temperatures in the enclosure are approximately one for all ratios of the source/sink pair. The highest dimensionless stream functions are also associated with the case where the source is one tenth the strength of the sink. The highest average Nusselt number on the hot wall corresponds to the case where the source is one tenth the strength of the sink.
