INVESTIGATION OF ORGANOTIN COMPOUNDS BY THE MOSSBAUER $gamma$-QUANTUM ABSORPTION METHOD

1963
Spectra of the absorption of the 28.3-kev gamma -quanta by the Sn/sup 119/ nuclei were measured by means of a method described in the Zhur. Eksptl'. i Teoret. Fiz., 43: (1962) No. 10. A source consisting of Sn/sup 119m/O/sub 2/ was used for the measurements which were carried out by cooling the absorber to the liquid N/sub 2/-temperature and involved the determination of the dependence of the resonance absorption of the gamma quanta on the velocity imparted to the absorber with respect to the source. Twenty-two organo-tin compounds were thus investigated. The values of the isomeric shifts and of the quadrupole splitting in tabular form are presented. The measurements, such as those involving compounds of the (C/sub 4/H/sub 9/)/sub 2/Sn(C/sub n/H/sub 2n+1/COO)/sub 2/-type in dicated that the atoms next to the Sn atoms exert a strong effect on the shape of the Mossbauer spectrum. Comparison of the spectrum of (C/sub 4/H/sub 9/)Sn(CH/ sub 3/COO)/sub 2/ with those of Cl-substituted derivatives showed that the presence of the Cl atoms, even though not directly bound to the Sn, causes a redistribution of the electron charge in the molecule. If the doublet splitting of the spectra were due only to nuclear quadrupole interaction, more » both doublet components should have the same height and width, but this is not the case. These differences might be due to another interaction sensitive to the magnetic quantum number at the nuclear half-level. (TTT)« less
