CASE HISTORY - DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION OF EARTHWORKS FOR N9 MOONE-TIMOLIN-BALLITORE BYPASS

2001
The N9 Moone-Timolin-Ballitore Bypass is the first design and build contract for a new national road completed in Ireland. The route is more than 6 km long and cost #11.5 million; it was opened ahead of schedule in December 2000. Ground conditions were typical of much of Ireland, with local areas of peat, much till, other glacial soils, overlying rock. Geotechnical design sought to maximize use of site-won soils and to allow some flexibility in the application of the specification. Some situations encountered during construction are described together with their solutions. For the covering abstract see ITRD E122412.
