A NEW METHOD FOR PLATING OF MOLYBDENUM

1991
Cathodic activation in an acid olution, followedd by a compatible strike, was effective for supporting adherent electroplate on molybdenum. The combination of hydrochloric acid and a Wood nickel chloride strike, for example, provided the adhesion needed to withstand bend and heat tests, thermal cycling and gap weld tests. The results are attributed to the protection provided by molybdenum hydride formed during the activation step after molybdenum oxide is reduced to molybdenum metal.
