Sustainable production of bioadsorbents from municipal and industrial wastes in a circular bioeconomy context

2021
Abstract An enormous quantity of municipal and industrial wastes is produced worldwide, which causes massive concern in waste disposal for wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operators and public sectors. Various waste biovalorization options were explored to reduce their impact on the environment. In this chapter, the conversion of waste into bioadsorbents for diverse applications is presented. Furthermore, the opportunities and challenges involved in the circular material flow concept are discussed. This chapter concludes with the benefits of utilizing municipal and industrial wastes for bioadsorbent production. This eco-friendly approach and products used in environmental cleanup such as toxic metal removal, improving sludge settling and dewatering, and oil-spill cleanup are emphasized. The viewpoints on socioeconomic improvement via the circular economy (CE) are also highlighted in detail.
