Iterative Doppler-Only Track initialization enhanced with Direction of Arrival information

2021
We study the sensitivity of tracking initialization in a passive radar receiver network which uses the concept of forward-scattering for target tracking. Multi-static radar on VHF is used with Doppler-only information, which as a method is a challenging way of tracking targets. Doppler does not reveal the location of the target easily and this often leads to ambiguous location estimates on track initialization. Direction of arrival information (DOA) can cancel ambiguity on track initialization and the impact of DOA information is discussed in this paper. The validity of the track initialization is verified with reference data based on Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) information. The Extended Kalman filter is used for tracker after the track initialization with Doppler-only measurements.
