Culture and Ethnic Impressions: Decorative Arts of Batek Tembeling, Pahang

2019
The traditional carvings and handicrafts of Batek of Tembeling in Pahang, Malaysia are used to interest visitors of Kuala Tahan National Park. However, recent natural calamities such as excessive logging, the massive flood of 2014 and El Nino have reduced the number of tourists. The present paper discusses the decorative carvings produced by the Batek through their cultural sense and the Batek’s challenges in merchandising their products. The purpose of the study is to understand the Batek carving senses, problems and future plans for the sustainability of the traditional industry. It is suggested that these decorative arts signify a close relationship of the Batek with the environment. The decorations are also governed by the tools used, perception and the skill of the carver. Through observation–participation method, the carvings were primarily photographed and semi-structured interviews were conducted with the Batek representatives and a local tourist guide. The interview transcript was coded using the Atlas.ti software. Among the issues disclosed were Batek reluctance to keep abreast with demands, poor cooperation between the Batek and tour agents, and lastly, the possible loss of heritage.
