Complications of oral contraceptives and antiphospholipid antibodies: reply to the letter by bruneau et a1
1988
Oral contraceptives particularly estrogen-containing and especially those containing ethinyl estradiol have been associated with thromboembolism coronary and cerebral occlusions hypertension chorea subarachnoid hemorrhage deep venous thromboses and flare-up of systemic lupus erythematosus. A significant number of oral contraceptive users who developed these complications were found to have anticardiolipin antibodies in their blood. It is suggested that other forms of contraception be prescribed for women in whom serum anticardiolipin antibodies are found.
