«DEMOS IN ITS ABSOLUTE BEAUTY»: CONSERVATIVE CRITICISM OF SLAVS AND LIBERAL PAN-SLAVISM IN THE 1860S - 1880S

2018
Article is devoted to conservative criticism of Slavic peoples and Slavophile moods in the 1860th – the 1880th. Widely known to the modern reader F.M. Dostoyevsky`s and K.N. Leontyev's anti-Slavic «prophecies» were not for that time something unique. Critical comments on the Slavic people proceeded also from representatives of Slavophile circles – P.A. Kulakovsky, A.A. Kireev, N.P. Gilyarov-Platonov. But it is the representatives of class conservatism treated Slavic peoples and Pan-Slavism mostly severe: V.P. Meshchersky and publicists of the newspaper «Vest» - V.D. Skaryatin and N.N. Yumatov.
