RÉGIMES ALIMENTAIRES DE DEUX SOUS-ESPÈCES DE LA PIE-GRIÈCHE MÉRIDIONALE Lanius meridionalis AU MAGHREB

2009
Diets of two subspecies of Southern Grey Shrike, Lanius meridionalis algeriensis and Lanius meridionalis elegans, were respectively studied in the North of Algeria and in the South of the country in the Sahara. Pellets examination allowed to identify more than 200 ingested taxa (more than 1500 prey). There was a significant difference in diet between both studied subspecies (P < 0.001), due to the respective importance of Coleopteran and Orthopteran preys. In the North, algeriensis consumed mostly Coleoptera, while in South, in February, elegans ingested mostly Orthoptera. Hymenoptera are found in both diets in relatively important quantities. Explanations are required.
