The prevalence of the erythrocyte glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency among Africans in Uganda

1963
Abstract 1. 1) A rapid screening test has been used to determine the prevalence of the erythrocyte glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in East African males living in Uganda. 2. 2) Of 498 males examined, 81 showed the deficiency. 3. 3) Several males showed a deficiency much greater than the rest. 4. 4) In an examination of 164 females no deficient subjects were detected by this screening test, although the group examined might have been expected to contain at least 44 heterozygotes and 4 homozygotes. 5. 5) The importance of the variety of the dye used in the test is stressed.
