Fertility Control With 15–8–5

1970
This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy and acceptance of an uninterrupted approach to oral contraception control by a new sequent ial method. The compound studied introduced into practice the concept of 23 days of medicated therapy in a 28-tablet package. The study was conducted in 2 family planning clinics in Chicago and involved 570 subjects who completed a total of 3333 cycles. Patients received 100 mcg mestranol for 15 days 100 mcg of mestranol plug 1.5 mg of chlormadinone acetate for 8 days and 5 days of placebo. Findings show the 15-8-5 continuous sequential therapy approach to conception control does provide very effective contraception with only 1 pregnancy occurring. Since this is a continuous therapeutic program it eliminates the pitfalls of cyclic therapy. 222 women discontinued use of this contraceptive for various reasons. The method makes it easier for the patient to remember to take the pill and tends to eliminate the confusion and discouragement encountered with cyclic therapy.(Authors modified)
