A metal material is provided and comprises: a metal base; a metal compound layer that is laminated on the base and is mainly composed of a compound of oxygen and a fourth row transition metal; platinum group parts that are dispersed in the top of the metal compound layer and are mainly composed of a platinum group element; and a platinum group compound coating film that covers the platinum group parts and is mainly composed of a compound of oxygen and a platinum group element. Preferably, the platinum group element constituting the platinum group parts is one or more elements selected from among Ru, Rh, Os and Ir.
