with increasing frequency because of recent advances in diagnostic imaging and the universal availability of ultrasonography. Liver masses are classified into two types, according to their biological behavior: benign foci such as cysts, hemangiomas, focal nodular hyperplasia, and hepatocellular adenoma; malignant tumors, e.g., hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocellular carcinoma, and liver metastases (table 1). In this article, we will discuss the epidemiology, manifestations, and diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of the clinically most important types of liver mass. The interdisciplinary nature of the subject will be stressed.
