PP59 THE PRIORITIES OF ADOLESCENTS WITH INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE: A COMPARISON BETWEEN PATIENTS AND PEDIATRICIANS

2011
Objective: To compare the importance of issues related to the daily life of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) ranked by pediatricians experienced with treating IBD, residents in pediatrics and adolescents with IBD. Materials: A 23-item questionnaire was administered to a group of adolescents (age >12 yrs) with IBD, to a group of pediatricians belonging to the Societa Italiana Gastroenterologia Epatologia e Nutrizione Pediatrica (SIGENP) and to a group of residents in pediatrics. Each participant was asked to rank each item of the questionnaire on a 5-point scale according to the importance of the issue in their daily life (patients’ group) or to the importance they thought it had for their patients (pediatricians’ and residents’ groups). A “face to face” approach was then adopted asking the pediatrician and patient to rank the items of the questionnaire at the same time, therefore having the pediatrician refer to that patient. Results: All items ranked both by pediatricians and residents had significantly higher scores than those ranked by patients. Of the top-5 most important issues ranked by patients only one was ranked by pediatricians, whereas two were ranked by residents. The same discrepancies emerged from the “face to face” approach. Conclusion: Pediatricians’ and adolescent patients’ concerns on IBD differ.
