Peritonitis remains the most serious complication of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), accounting for considerable morbidity and change to other dialysis modalities.(1) Whereas there is some evidence that peritonitis rates are showing gradual improvement, this problem is still a source of some concern in terms of hospitalization, back-up hemodialysis facilities, and added cost.
