A Clinico - Haematological Profile of Pancytopenias

2016
Pancytopenia is a common haematological problem and it can be a striking feature of many serious and life-threatening illnesses, ranging from simple drug-induced transient bone marrow hypoplasia and Megaloblastic anaemia to fatal bone marrow aplasia or leukaemia. The severity of pancytopenia and the underlying pathology determine the management and prognosis. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the clinical parameters and haematological profile in defined cases of pancytopenia. Total 80 patients of pancytopenia were studied over a period of 6 months. Pancytopenia was more among patients of 30 years and above, many of them had severe anaemia and moderate thrombocytopenia. The leading cause of Pancytopenia was Megaloblastic anaemia and the rare causes were Dengue, Fanconi's anaemia and Wiskott Aldrich syndrome. The study gives an account of the common causes of Pancyto penia & highlights the varied causes of Pancytopenia, besides this, the study has also picked up some of the rarer causes of Pancytopenia.
