Effects of 900 MHz Microwave Radiation on the Head Surface Temperature and Neurobehavior of Mice

2009
[Objective] To investigate the effects of 900 MHz microwave radiation on the head surface temperature, learning and memory abilities and the excitability upon environment in mice.[Methods] Kunming mice were exposed to 900 MHz,90 μW/cm2 microwave radiation. The head surface temperature of mice was measured at different time points of radiation using a infrared thermal imager. The learning and memory abilities before and after radiation were studied by means of step through test, and the excitability upon environment was studied with open field test.[Results] The head surface temperature of mice in exposure group increased with radiation time, and reached the highest point after 100 min radiation. In the step-through test, there was no apparent difference for the latency and error integral after radiation for one time or repeated times. In the open field test, for one time radiation group, the move time was significantly decreased after 30 min exposure(P 0.05).For repeated radiation group, the total distance and the move time of mice increased(P 0.05),the mean speed increased(P 0.01)after 6 days radiaton compared with that of the same group before radiation.[Conclusion] 900 MHz,90 μW/cm2 microwave radiation could have thermal effects in mice. One time or repeated microwave radiation may affect the excitability of mice to a certain extent. The non-space learning and memory abilities in mice were not markedly influenced.
