Evidence-based parenting support across cultures: The Triple P—Positive Parenting Program experience

2020
Abstract This chapter explores the influence of culture and living context on parenting and the related implications for the optimal provision of parenting support. Developing an empirical base for an intervention approach takes time and resources, and there is growing evidence to suggest that existing proven programs can be effective in new cultural contexts, with only minor adaptations. The question is how much do evidence-based programs need to be adapted and tailored when implemented in contexts other than the one for which they were originally developed? This chapter introduces the Triple P—Positive Parenting Program as an exemplar of an evidence-based parent support program and shares learnings from the implementation of Triple P, developed in Australia, across diverse cultural contexts in 39 countries. It discusses factors that support the contextual fit and scalability of transported programs. Implications for policy, research, and practice are also discussed.
