Applications of camera-based physiological measurement beyond healthcare

Abstract Camera-based measurement of vital signals has been touted for its great potential. Capturing important physiological processes happening “inside” the body, which are often “hidden” to the unaided eye, could have many applications. To most, the immediate applications that come to mind are in health and wellness tracking; however, there are many other areas in which unobtrusive physiological sensing could help advance the vision of ubiquitous computing, including affective computing and mixed reality. We review the current state of the art in camera-based measurement of physiological signals in real-world settings and discover there are many challenges that remain to be overcome.
