Ultrasonic scanning employed to control the positioning of the Multiload Cu 250 IUD

1984
The Multiload Cu 250 IUD was inserted in 100 parturient women immediately postdelivery of the placenta. Gynecological examination and ultrasonic scanning were used to control positioning of the device 6-7 days after delivery. These women came for follow-up at 3 and 12 months after delivery. Ultrasonic scanning was repeated if threads from the device could not be seen. Results of ultrasonic scanning were correct in approximately 95% 1 week after delivery. Of 98 cases 2 false positive and 1 false negative finding were cited. Gynecological examination at the same time provided correct information concerning IUD position in only 50% of the patients.
