Tasking, Teaming, Swarming: Design Patterns for Human Delegation of Unmanned Vehicles

2021
In this article we discuss the distinction between human delegation modes of single and multiple unmanned vehicles (UV). To describe the co-agency of humans and highly automated unmanned systems (i.e. human autonomy teaming, HAT) a design and description language for HAT design patterns will be used to describe and distinguish between control modes of tasking, teaming and swarming. Concerning tasking, we advocate for a scalable delegation concept. A distinction of multi-UV teaming and swarming will be made from a human user’s perspective. Finally, we will briefly report on some preliminary results from human-in-the-loop experimentation in our fast-jet research simulator, involving the cockpit-based control of UVs and swarms.
