Composition for use in extracting and purifying nucleic acids from food samples characterized in that the composition is a solid mixture, comprising: 10 to 40 weight percent of particles which consist of water-insoluble hydrated magnesium silicate and having an average particle size of 0.8 to 2.5 microns; as 20 to 70 weight percent crystalline phosphate buffered saline which is slightly soluble in water, whereby a solution is produced which has a pH value of 5.5 to 7.0 at 70 to 95 degrees Celsius.
