(Zygophyllaceae) feeding on the digestive track of the migratory locust Schistocerca gregaria Forsk. (Orthoptera, Acrididae)

Toxic effects of Peganum harmala (Zygophyllaceae) on the digestive track of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria were tested. The histological study was performed in the medium intestine. This later presents a reduction of the external circular muscle resulting in a relaxation of the intestine and atrophy of the intestinal mucosa which showed a reduction of striated epithelium. However the mesenteric epithelium showed a grainy appearance, an altered edge of the microvillosities and some typical signs of cell necrosis.
