Performance Enhancement of Polarization Reconfigurable Antenna for Wireless Communication Applications

2019
A polarization-reconfigurable (PR) antenna for wireless communication applications is proposed. The PR antenna consists of two PIN-diodes that work as a switch to generate the linear and circular polarization capabilities. This work presents the enhancement on gain and bandwidth of the PR antenna. The designs were simulated using CST Microwave Studio on FR4 board with dielectric constant of 4.7, loss tangent of 0.019 and thickness of 1.6mm. In order to improve the gain, directivity and bandwidth of the antenna, a simple superstrate is used along with array of patches. The simulation result shows that at the operating frequency of 5.8 GHz, the PR can increase the gain from 0.91 to 3.17 dBi and the directivity from 5.96 to 8.47 dBi.
