A Comparative Study of Blood Concentrations after Peroral Benzathine (DBED) Penicillin V and Potassium Penicillin V

1971
AbstractThe serum concentration of benzathine (DBED) penicillin V after oral administration in tablet form was studied. The preparation gave therapeutically adequate high and longstanding concentrations. Potassium penicillin V in the same doses to the same patients gave 3–4 times higher concentrations than DBED penicillin V. No significant differences were established between the two preparations in the maintenance of the serum concentrations. Eight hours after administration most patients no longer displayed measurable amounts of any of the two penicillins. Ingestion of food delayed the absorption of DBED penicillin V and the serum concentration was maintained a little longer when the drug was taken postprandially. DBED penicillin V in tablet form cannot be considered superior to potassium penicillin V.
