Comparing two drugs combination for conscious sedation in oral and maxillofacial surgery

Objective: The objective of the present study was to compare the efficacy of Propofol and Fentanyl with Propofol and Ketamine in conscious sedation for minor oral surgical procedures. Material and Method: 26 patients were randomly selected for the study and divided into two groups of 13 each. 13 patients were administered a combination of Propofol and Fentanyl during the minor oral surgical procedure and 13 patients were administered Propofol and Ketamine combination during the procedure. Throughout the procedure a note of the various hemodynamic parameters and oxygen saturation was made. Results: With regards to the hemodynamic parameters Propofol and Ketamine combination did not show much deviation in the heart rate. There was no appreciable difference in the systolic blood pressure on comparison of both the groups but diastolic blood pressure was significantly lower in Propofol and Ketamine group. Mean oxygen saturation was also significantly higher in the Propofol and Ketamine group as compared to Propofol and Fentanyl group. Conclusion: As per results it was concluded that Propofol and Ketamine combination is a better alternative than Propofol and Fentanyl combination for conscious sedation.
