GUIDE FOR PAINTING STEEL STRUCTURES

1997
This guide provides requirements for painting newly fabricated or existing steel highway structures. Methods and materials specified meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requirements as of January 1, 1993, and are based on the latest technology and research to produce the most cost-effective, environmentally acceptable steel protection systems available. The guide is intended to provide standards for paint selection and application that will provide long-term protection and reduce corrosion control costs. The scope of the guide includes painting bare steel; painting existing structures that are in service; nonhazardous painting systems; multiple-level volatile organic compounds systems; and demolition, alteration, repair or renovation of steel coated with hazardous materials.
