Initial understanding of multiple-electrodes ridiofrequency ablation for liver cancer

2001
Objective To evaluate the effect of multiple-electrodes ridiofrequency ablation(RFA) therapy on liver cancer. Methods RFA was undertaken in 18 patients with liver cancer including 12 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma and 6 cases of hepatic metastatic carcinoma. Ten patients underwent RFA intraoperation and 8 patients received percutaneous RFA. Twenty-four cancer foci in 18 cases ranging from 2 cm to 8 cm in diameter (mean,4.2 cm) were treated. Results Slight to middle liver dysfunctions in all patients were observed on the first day but returned to normal on the seventh day after operation.During the follow-up period of 3 to 8 months (mean, 4.2 months), completed necrosis was observed in 21 nodules. Local recurrence was detected in 3 nodules and all nodules became necrotic after second session of RFA. No severity complications occurred. Conclusions RFA is a safe, effective, and well-tolerated treatment for patient with liver cancer. Laparotomy RFA could prevent the complications of RFA,but its long-time curative effect remains to be investigated.
