Corrosion Resistance of Non-Magnetic Stainless Steel for Drilling Tools

2008
The world-wide use of Non Magnetic Stainless Steel (NMSS) for Drilling Tools in the oilfield industry faces the challenges with increasingly complex and costly drilling operation. Due to the continued advancements of drilling technology the materials have to fulfill higher demands, especially on mechanical and corrosion properties. The higher working loads raise high requirements on the mechanical properties of the materials such as the yield strength and impact toughness. The hostile down-hole environments caused by drilling fluids, at higher temperatures, make the corrosion resistance to one of the key factors for materials engineers when evaluating and selecting materials for drilling tools from the current NMSS candidates.
