Solid‐Particle Erosion of Thin Films Deposited on Ceramics

2008
Solid-particle erosion of an environmental barrier coating on silicon nitride substrates and a diamond thin film on silicon have been studied for impact angles of 20 and 90°, using 100 and 240 grit alumina and silicon carbide abrasives at 50 and 100 m/s. Weight-loss measurements are combined with scanning electron microscopy to determine that the predominant loss is determined by a brittle fracture mechanism.
