Medical stressors associated with illness and surgery make extraordinary psychological demands on children. A child's coping abilities, both emotional and cognitive, are at the heart of adjustment to these demands. Social support is also an important element in the child's ability to recover psychologically. Finally, a child's previous medical experiences, psychiatric problems, and learning disabilities may affect the child's behavior.
