Methods for treating conditions or alterations that can be alleviated by reducing the intake of food comprising the administration of an effective amount of an exedin or an exedin agonist, alone or in combination with other compounds or compositions that produce satiety are described. The procedures are useful for treating conditions or disorders, such as obesity, type II diabetes, eating problems and insulin resistant syndrome. These procedures are equally useful for lowering the level of glucose, lowering the level of lipid in the plasma, reducing cardiac risk, reducing appetite, and reducing the weight of the subjects. Pharmaceutical compositions for use in the processes of this invention are also described.
