Provided is a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery (1) which comprises a positive electrode (3), a negative electrode (4) that contains a negative electrode layer, and a nonaqueous electrolyte. The negative electrode layer contains lithium titanium oxide. The negative electrode layer has, in the surface thereof, a first region (21) that has a low lithium concentration and a second region (22) that is present around the first region and has a high lithium concentration; and the negative electrode layer satisfies the following formula (I). T2 tetravalent titanium atoms among the titanium atoms in the lithium titanium oxide contained in the first region (21), and T2 represents the ratio of tetravalent titanium atoms among the titanium atoms in the lithium titanium oxide contained in the second region (22).
