ACTIVE COMMUTING TO THE UNIVERSITY (Case Study: Students of Gadjah Mada University, In donesia)

2015
In order to alleviate the negative impacts of motor ized vehicle use as well as create sustainable envi ronment within campus area, it is important to encourage mo de shifting among university students. Active trans port modes such as walking, cycling, and using public tr ansport can be considered as alternative modes. Thi s study conducted to investigate students’ travel beh avior, particularly active commuting to the univers ity. The potential for modal change were examined by using transtheoretical model of behavior change from Prochaska and DiClemente (1982). Furthermore, ANOVA test was employed to identify the perceptions between students across stages of change towards motivators and barriers for active commuting. Questionnaires were disseminated to active students and 417 valid responses were gathered. Results sho wed that there were some potential changing for student s to use active modes. Moreover, there were also significant differences between students in perceiv ing motivators and barriers depending on their stag es of change.
