Proteomic analysis of human samples of irradiated tissue: Identification of a biosignature of radiation dose response

Purpose/Objective: Currently, there is no scientific consensus on the biologic activity of low dose low LET ionizing radiation (LDIR) in humans. For health and regulatory purposes, a linear no-threshold model of radiation effects is assumed for low dose (1–10 cGy) exposures, but in vitro studies in various models have suggested that this may either under or over estimate risks. Given the potential risks, from environmental exposure, medical imaging and penumbra dose from therapeutic irradiation, especially IMRT, there is a significant need to establish LDIR risk in humans. These studies were therefore undertaken to measure biologic activity of LDIR in primary human fibroblasts.
