Study on the Effect of Steady-state Voltage Regulation of New-generation Synchronous Condensers on HVDC Commutation Failure

2019
The dynamic reactive power support capability of the grid during faults and the voltage level after faults have an important impact on DC commutation failure. A new-generation synchronous condenser can effectively improve the system dynamic reactive power support capacity and grid voltage level. However, the new-generation synchronous condenser and DC are controlled independently, and there is no reasonable coordinated control strategy between them. In this paper, the mechanism of DC commutation failure has been studied. The new-generation synchronous condenser's reactive power output characteristics have been studied. Then, the reasonable coordination strategy between the new-generation synchronous condensers with DC system is proposed. The DC commutation failure probability is reduced based on this strategy. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
