Analysis of characteristics and related risk factors of patients with diabetic foot ulcers died during hospitalization

2011
Objective Characteristics and related risk factors of patients with diabetic foot ulcers(DFU) died during hospitalization were analyzed to define the related factors of their death. Methods Data of hospitalized patients with DFU within one year period were collected, including routine tests, results of organ function examination and treatment.Severity of foot ulcer and infection were classified according to the grading systems of Wagner and Infectious Disease Society of America, respectively.Clinical items were compared between died and survived patients, and risk factors related to death were analyzed with Logistic regression. Results Death rate of hospitalized DFU patients was 8.6%.Heart failure was the most frequent cause of death(31.5%),and cardiac sudden death was the second(21.1%).Compared with survived patients, blood hemoglobin, albumin and sodium levels were lower and kidney and heart function were worse in died patients(P0.05),and the severities of foot ulcer and infection as well as the incidence of complication other than diabetic peripheral neuropathy and hypertension were more severe. The course of diabetes and DFU,index of macro-and micro-vascular disease were the independent risk factors of death(P0.05).Conclusions DFU patients died during hospitalization suffered from more severe foot ulcers and had more worse whole body health status, especially the cardiovascular function. This suggested that careful monitoring and timely intervention should be administered to DFU patients.
