Glycogen metabolism in ostrea edulis (L.)—factors affecting glycogen synthesis
1972
Abstract 1. 1. The capacity of gill tissue to carry out the incoporation of 14 C-glucose into glycogen was studied in comparison with the glycogen content and the annual cycle of this carbohydrate. 2. 2. Glycogen synthesis in the oyster is inhibited in anoxia. No change in glycogen synthesis has been observed at different oxygen levels. 3. 3. Metabolites which produce an increase in respiration do not stimulate the rate of glycogen synthesis by the gill tissue. 4. 4. Glycogen synthesis from gluconeogenesis, estimated from different precursors, shows that the best of them all is glycerol.
