Dietary supplements for people with diabetes

2017
Optimally balanced diet in combination with adequate physical activity has an important role in the primary and secondary prevention of diabetes. Recent years, there is growing interest in the beneficial effects of some nutrients and non-nutrient biological active compounds as part of medical nutrition therapy. These compounds include antioxidant vitamins (C and E), vitamin D, minerals (chromium, zinc and magnesium), omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fiber, Alpha lipoic acid as well as some phytochemicals, single or in combination. Despite the fact that uncontrolled diabetes is often associated with micronutrient deficiencies, there is insufficient evidence to support the use vitamin and mineral supplements in diabetic patients. Routine supplementation with antioxidants is not advised because of concern related to long-term safety. In order to prevent possible interaction with prescription drugs, diabetic patients before use of dietary supplements need to consult with physicians or pharmacists.
