Periodization: Theory and Methodology of Training (Book Review)

2020
Accepted as one of the leading pioneers of periodization, Bompa has teamed with Buzzichelli to produce the latest version of the classic text Periodization: Theory and Methodology of Training. I was familiar with the earlier version as an undergraduate and the organisation of the text maintains a 3-part structure; training theory, planning and periodisation, and training methods. Within these main parts the basic training concepts and considerations essential to planning athletic capacities are discussed. Some notable updates to this edition include an expansion on methods for developing muscle strength, including manipulation of loading variables and the conversion to sport specific strength; updates to information on training sessions, microcycles and macrocycles; and a more detailed explanation of speed and agility training that differentiates between individual and team sports. An image bank is available for instructors, however there are no additional online resources. For example, online spreadsheets containing periodization profile templates that could be adapted would be a useful accompanying resource. This is an area the next edition could address. Despite the cost, this will remain a key text for students studying sport science/coaching related degrees and practitioners in the field of athletic development.
