Simultaneous particle image velocimetry and gradient heat flux measurement

2015
Strong connection between surface heat transfer and fluid dynamics determines the importance of real-time experimental investigation of both processes. In the current study we introduced some significant results, acquired during development and probation of the new method of simultaneous particle image velocimetry (PIV) and gradient heat flux measurement. The method is based on combined use of PIV technology and unique gradient heat flux sensors. In this paper the method is applied to investigation of heat transfer and fluid dynamics around the single circular cylinder with different yaw angles. Results show a minimum of heat transfer rate for a specific yaw angle, which varies with different end effects. These effects are connected with direction of the third velocity component in after-tossing wake. We also used hot wire anemometry to acquire a dominant frequency in the wake.
