Three separate studies were conducted in La Paz Cochabamba and Santa Cruz clinics as part of the evaluation: a client survey a service provider survey and observations of provider-client interactions in counseling sessions. In the client survey understanding of the term "reproductive health" increased by 28% from pre-test to post-test among the 122 respondents exposed to the materials compared with only 14% among the 105 non-exposed controls. The number of modern family planning methods spontaneously identified rose from 3.46 to 4.69 methods among exposed cases and from 2.84 to 3.35 among controls. Detailed knowledge about contraceptive methods and their correct use increased by 12% among exposed clients compared with 3% among controls. Moreover exposure to the IEC materials resulted in an 8% increase in spousal communication about family planning compared with a 3% increase among controls. Clients found the print materials readable easy to understand and attractive. Service providers made most use of the methods overview pamphlet (71.4%) and flipchart (67.86%). The materials were most effective when providers received training in their use.
